It’s true that in the last few years we’ve become a little bored with aerobic exercise. Whereas once it dominated, these days we’ve become more sensitive to how our bodies respond to movement and prefer gentler forms of exercise such as pilates or strength training.

But if you miss the high that HIIT once gave you, try Stepperton, the latest workout going viral on TikTok. Promising to put the fun back into fitness, it might be just what you need to reignite your passion for fast-paced exercise. If you remember the ’80s, this is for you.

Here’s your complete guide to this craze, covering everything you need to know. While you’re there, you might also be interested in our take on whether walking is good exercise, finding out more about the 3-2-8 method, and finding out the results of one of our health writers trying out glute bridges every day for a week.

Stepperton Trending on Tiktok – Guide

What is Stepperton?

Despite being trending on TikTok, some of you may not be aware of the Stepperton craze and are wondering what it is all about. If so, let us explain.

“Stepperton is a fast-paced, dance-based workout that’s taking the fitness world by storm,” explains Claudia Dumond, personal trainer and founder of Minimondo. “This unique class combines hip hop and Afro-step routines with energetic step aerobics, paired with classical and uptempo tracks. Known for its energetic, fun routines and easy participation, Stepperton is not only a music-based exercise, but also a full-body boot camp that improves cardiovascular fitness, coordination and overall fitness.”

Sounds fun, but is this a modern-day version of an ’80s step class? Well, sort of. “There are some similarities to an old-fashioned step class,” agrees Eliza Flynn, personal trainer and founder of The Warrior Method. “They both use steps (like low, height-adjustable benches that you step onto) and move to music, except Stepperton is a bit more complicated, the music is faster and more upbeat, and there’s a lot less leotards and leg warmers!” Oh, and we love leg warmers.

When did Stepperton become popular?

Started by fitness instructor Julius Barfi, who became bored with working out at home during the pandemic, the workouts quickly became a huge hit, with his most recent post racking up nearly 5 million views on TikTok.

That’s because Barfee’s enthusiasm is infectious and his motto is to ensure everyone has the best time in class. Who could resist that?

What are the benefits of Stepperton?

If you’re looking for an alternative to running, or simply want to incorporate more cardio into your training program, Stepperton could be a great option.

“Stepperton has many benefits,” agrees Flynn: “It’s a mood booster, improves coordination, gets your heart rate up, strengthens your lower body and improves balance. Plus, because it’s done in a group, it’s an opportunity to build closeness and community – especially when you complete the routine and there’s a collective sigh of relief and a sense of accomplishment.”

Now let’s take a closer look at the benefits one by one.

1. Improves cardiovascular health

As you’d expect from an upbeat, energetic workout, Stepperton is great for cardiovascular health: Stepping up and down in a high-energy routine will get your heart rate up and working up a sweat.

And we all know that cardiovascular health is crucial not only for reducing the risk of developing heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, but also for boosting your mood and preventing disease.

2. It’s a full-body workout

Stepperton classes are guaranteed to build full body strength – not only will you be working your legs hard, obviously, but your core (keeping your balance is no easy feat!) and upper body too.

“Stepperton targets multiple muscle groups,” Dumond says, “which builds overall fitness that can be applied to other workouts and everyday life.”

3. Improved collaboration

As a dance-style workout, Stepperton requires a certain level of coordination. Good coordination not only reduces the risk of injury (no one wants to slip off the steps in the middle of class), but it’s also been shown to improve cognitive function in older adults.

Furthermore, research (this study British Medical Journal) shows that dance may be more effective at treating depression than medication or talk therapy. Stepperton is a win for brain activity!

4. Fun and accessible

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the best exercise is one you can stick with, and it’s important that it’s fun. Stepperton is undoubtedly a fun exercise, and immersing yourself in a dance-style workout is almost guaranteed to distract you from the stresses of life.

Another plus is how accessible the exercises are: “While some of the dance moves may seem a little complicated, they’re broken down into easier, more attainable steps for beginners and more advanced movements for more experienced dancers,” Flynn reassures.

So, whatever your fitness level or lack of experience, Stepperton is well worth giving it a try.

Can I do Stepperton from home?

Fun, full-body, at-home workouts are the newest craze for exercise, so you’re probably wondering whether you need to find an actual class or if you can do Stepperton from the comfort of your living room.

The good news is that you can definitely do this workout at home, but if you’re just starting out, it’s probably worth investing in at least a few classes.

“With the abundance of online videos and virtual classes available, Stepperton can definitely be done at home,” Dumond says, “but having an instructor with you can help you maintain proper form, reduce the risk of injury, and give you extra motivation and energy. Beginners can start with an instructor to help them learn the fundamentals and correct technique, while more experienced people can easily follow the online routine at home.”

Is Stepperton just a fad?

Well, there’s no denying that it’s popular right now, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some legitimate benefits. Fans say it’s the most fun they have while working out, and we all know that a little bit of exercise is better than none at all, so don’t worry if you make the wrong moves at first.

If you’re struggling, find an instructor whose style you enjoy and above all else, have fun!
