It may seem silly, but Manchester United are still unable to appoint Gareth Southgate as manager so they may decide to install Erik ten Hag as manager.
After an exhaustive search at Old Trafford, the club decided to keep Ten Hag as manager despite finishing eighth in the Premier League and a disastrous Champions League defeat.
The club held talks with other candidates, including Thomas Tuchel, but ultimately decided to stick with the Dutch manager who led the team to an unexpected FA Cup final victory over Manchester City at the end of an overall terrible season.
However, The Daily Telegraph reports: “United are currently unable to land the ideal candidate – perhaps England manager Gareth Southgate – and there will be suspicions they are biding their time to see whether Ten Hag can turn their fortunes around.”
of The idea that Southgate is an ideal candidate for Manchester United It seems absurd, but the club have apparently chosen the current England manager as the club’s new technical director, seeing him as the perfect man to work alongside Jason Wilcox.
Southgate remains England manager and is unlikely to speak to Manchester United or any other clubs during his term in charge, so ten Hag will remain United manager and will be offered a new contract when his current one expires at the end of the season.
It is believed that under the new regime, his responsibility regarding transfers will be reduced, which is wise given his particularly poor success rate.
