Activist DJ Switch, who filmed the infamous shooting of EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, has reacted to the ECOWAS Court of Justice ruling that found the Federal Government of Nigeria guilty of human rights violations in its response to the #EndSARS protests, saying the ruling was a ray of hope for truth and justice.
The court ruled on Wednesday that the Nigerian government’s actions, particularly the use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, violated several international human rights standards, including articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The court ordered the Nigerian government to pay 2 million naira as compensation for each victim named in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed by DJ Switch and two others after President William Ruto fired almost his entire cabinet on Thursday following widespread anti-government protests across the country last month.
The youth-led protests were sparked by proposed tax increases that Mr Ruto later withdrew, leading to violence with police that left at least 39 people dead and led to demonstrators briefly occupying Parliament.
In a televised address to the nation, William Ruto made it clear that he would also sack the country’s attorney-general, but that the role of deputy president would not be affected.
