Morocco is a destination that is having a great time right now.

After a record year for tourism in 2023, this fascinating cultural destination in North Africa set a new tourism record in the first quarter of 2024.

I went to Morocco for the first time a few months ago. I was surprised to find that it is a perfect destination for solo travelers. — even for solo female travelers.

Morocco may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of solo travel destinations, but we met many other solo travelers during our stay. (This makes sense, given Morocco’s overall increase in tourism and that solo travel is also trending.)

Here’s why Morocco is a surprisingly good destination for your next solo trip.

feel very safe

I’m not going to lie. When I first came to Morocco, I felt a little apprehensive.

I had just come from Egypt, and although it was a destination I loved, I couldn’t recommend it for solo female travelers.

I thought Morocco would be more of the same.

In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how little of the hassle and harassment I was used to in Egypt.

The destinations that felt safest to me were Marrakech, Rabat, and Chaoun.

Now, there are some places in Morocco that you don’t want to go to alone, even in urban areas. If you’re traveling alone, it’s important to do plenty of research beforehand and take extra precautions.

But overall, I felt very safe during my solo trip in Morocco.

very affordable

Another reason why Morocco is perfect for solo travelers is that it’s reasonably priced.

You can stay in a nice riad (traditional Moroccan accommodation similar to a B&B) for $40 a night, or less in a simpler hotel or hostel.

Food is another area of my budget that doesn’t have to cost a fortune, as I ate many delicious meals in Morocco for under $10.

Transportation is also quite cheap. For example, there is a high-speed train that takes you from Casablanca to Marrakech in 3 hours and costs only about $15.

Become a digital nomad hub

Morocco is also the perfect destination in 2024 for solo travelers working remotely around the world as digital nomads.

It is fast becoming Africa’s top digital nomad hub.

Marrakech in particular is a great place to base yourself as a digital nomad. This vibrant city has all the amenities a digital nomad needs, with easy access to one of the world’s most fascinating cultural destinations.

Marrakech is also a convenient base, as Europe is just a few hours away (Spain and Portugal are both less than two hours away by plane).

Abundant tour options

Finally, if you are traveling alone but don’t actually want to travel to Morocco by myselfThis country has many options that are great for group tours.

This is actually what I did at the beginning of my Morocco trip to test the waters.

Companies like G Adventures and Intrepid Travel offer tours that allow you to travel to Morocco with a group of like-minded travelers and spend a week or two exploring the country.

This eliminates the hassle of logistics (and makes it easier to visit destinations that are difficult to get to on your own), while still giving you plenty of free time to explore on your own.

Of course, it’s not required. You can easily visit Morocco as a solo traveler and book everything yourself, including transportation (this is fairly easy since Morocco has a decent rail system that connects the main tourist attractions).
