GWERC’s ProGeny Marketplace was founded with the goal of keeping capital in the community while focusing on local entrepreneurs.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — While some businesses are talking about relocating from Whitehaven, a new store just opened on Thursday, March 28th.

But it’s not your typical retail store. All products on GWERC’s ProGeny Marketplace are sourced from small businesses in Whitehaven.

The goal of the Greater Whitehaven Economic Redevelopment Corporation (GWERC) is to help change the perception that Whitehaven is exposed to crime through community and business development.

GWERC has partnered with the nonprofit organization ProGeny Place to open a new store at 4466 Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Currently, about 20 entrepreneurs belong to the store. ProGeny Place CEO Rhonnie Brewer called it a streamlined shopping experience.

“This is an opportunity for them to have a nice, calm shopping experience, but the reality is they have a huge amount of things to choose from,” Brewer said.

According to GRWEC, the project has been in the works for three years. GWERC Chairman Will Frazier said it’s worth every penny to help keep funds in the community. ”

GWERC executive director Andre Gibson hopes the store will boost Whitehaven’s economy and help showcase the area in a positive light.

“We don’t think we’re building great communities. We’re restoring great communities. We want to give small businesses and entrepreneurs the tools and options to contribute to their success. ,” Gibson said.

GWERC’s ProGeny Marketplace is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you are a small business in Whitehaven and are interested in having your product on the shelves, please contact GWERC or ProGeny Place.
