The level of hypocrisy displayed by our local elected officials is astonishing. Sen. Eichon and Reps. Heinzman, Davis, and Kresha have called for Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s resignation or absence from Congress in each of the recent Congressional reports. Mr. Mitchell is charged with felony trespassing at his stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes. The investigation is not yet complete, but lawmakers are calling for immediate punishment. Demanding accountability is the right thing to do, but Minnesotans expect it to be done in a measured and fair manner. When we all do better, we all become better.
In the same week that these lawmakers called for the sanctions or resignation of their colleagues, their party’s presidential candidate, Donald Trump, is sitting in a New York courtroom facing 34 felonies in a hush money trial. He has also been charged in three other jurisdictions with felonies, including election interference, theft of classified documents and obstruction of justice. This is not to minimize the charges against Senator Mitchell. That’s serious. We want leaders with integrity. She will have her day in court, but I doubt she will be constantly rushing to the microphone to attack the judge, the judge’s family, potential witnesses and jurors.
I just hope Republicans take brooms and clean their own front doors before coming to Democrats’ houses. Trump is currently scheduled to be the headline speaker at the annual state Republican Lincoln-Reagan banquet. I can only imagine Abe and Ronald spinning around in their graves.
