Is Wall Street closed on New Year’s Day? Here are the stock market holidays in 2024
The Nasdaq continues to post record weekly closing highs after a strong first-half gain. The S&P 500 is hovering above the 5,500 level for the first time, while the Dow is modestly consolidating at its 10-week support line. As we head into a new earnings season, the next holiday for the NYSE and Nasdaq is Independence Day on Thursday, July 4th.
Stock and bond markets closed early for the holiday on July 3 and remained closed on July 4. Dow Jones futures traded as usual.
Here’s a look at the July 4th market holiday and other upcoming stock market holidays.
What are stock market holidays?
So-called market holidays are any non-weekend days when the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are closed, usually holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
On some holidays or days close to holidays, the stock market remains open but the bond market is closed or closes early. Markets may also close for national days of mourning, as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq did in 2018 to honor the late President George H. W. Bush.
If a particular holiday falls on a Saturday, the stock market will typically be closed on the preceding Friday. Similarly, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the market will usually be closed on the following Monday.
Regular trading hours for the NYSE and NASDAQ are Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 4pm ET. Markets are closed on weekends.
