Fashion often serves as a visible expression of someone’s cultural identity. It says a lot about who we are and where we come from. Many Indians live abroad and therefore have few opportunities to embrace their traditions and culture. Recently, a video of a woman walking the streets of London in a lungi, flaunting her South Indian culture, has gone viral on social media. The internet has praised the woman for her confidence and appreciated her for promoting Indian culture in the UK.
The video was posted on Instagram by @valerydaania, an Indian Tamilian who has been living in London for many years. In the video, Valery can be seen wearing a stylish blue checked lungi wrapped around her neck and a plain T-shirt. She is seen walking down the street flaunting her extraordinary outfit. She also wore stylish sunglasses that perfectly matched her outfit. After walking down the street, she also walked into a grocery store wearing the same outfit. The cashier at the store was also intrigued to see the extraordinary customer. The videographer also captured the reactions of passersby, some of whom were amazed by her unique style while others flashed beaming smiles at her. She captioned the post with a cheerful background image saying, “Wearing a lungi in London.”
When she uploaded the video to her Instagram account, it quickly went viral, eliciting mixed reactions from her followers, many of whom appreciated her for promoting her culture and staying true to her roots. One user commented, “Hahaha amazing. Kudos to you for doing this,” while another commented, “Akka you deserve so much respect. I love you. Finally I see you smile.”
The video went viral on social media, racking up over a million views on Instagram.
Apart from this, Valerie once again got the opportunity to flaunt a stylish lungi in London and this time, many came up to her and questioned her about her culture.
In another space, a group of dancers from Kerala flaunted their lungis as they danced to the famous 1997 Backstreet Boys single, “Everybody.” People marveled at their exceptional dancing skills in lungis.
