American lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret announced Wednesday that its annual fashion show, canceled since 2018 due to sluggish sales and declining audiences, will return this fall, bringing high-profile models back to the catwalk.
The company announced in a video posted to Instagram that its “runway show will return this fall,” but did not provide details such as dates, locations or which models would be in attendance.
“We read the comments and heard your opinions,” the group said in the post. “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is back, reflecting who we are today plus everything you know and love: glamor, runway, wings, musical entertainment and more.”
Back in November 2019, the Ohio-based company announced it was canceling the show, which had been criticized for being sexist and out of step with the #MeToo movement, which was gaining support.
Launched in 1995, the runway show attracted millions of people around the world, but viewership has declined over the years. In 2014 he was watched by 9 million Americans. By 2018, that number was just 3 million.
Iconic models such as Gisele Bündchen, Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima took part in this glamorous event, guaranteeing a certain celebrity status by becoming one of the so-called “angels” of the show.
Entertainers Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Rihanna and Bruno Mars also participated.
The label was owned by L Brands, but its board of directors approved spinning off Victoria’s Secret as an independent company and listing it on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021.
It is now Victoria’s Secret & Company and includes a lingerie label, a pink brand for young women, and a cosmetics and accessories division called Victoria’s Secret Beauty.
The company has been suffering over the 2019 case of Jeffrey Epstein, a New York financier who committed suicide in prison after being charged with sexually assaulting an underage girl.
Epstein was close to Leslie Wexner, president of L Brands, who helped introduce him to the world of the jet set and the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.
In 2023, the company reported revenue of $6.12 billion, down 2.6% year over year, and net income of $181 million, compared to $173 million a year earlier.
At the end of the year, the group had more than 1,300 stores worldwide.
