According to a recent projection from On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Billy Embody, Wisconsin is leaned to acquire cornerback Zay Gentry from SMU in the 2025 class.
Gentry committed to SMU on May 19. He then took official visits to the University of Wisconsin on May 31, Baylor on June 14 and Nebraska on June 21, but remained committed to SMU throughout the process.

Based on On3’s two projections and the Badgers’ continued pursuit of the talented cornerback after he committed to SMU, it appears Wisconsin is looking to back out of its commitment to Gentry, an indication that’s especially clear given Steve Wiltfong’s background as a scout, first with 247Sports and now with On3.
Gentry is currently ranked by 247Sports as the No. 533 player, No. 45 cornerback and No. 87 recruit out of his native Texas in the 2025 class. If he joins Wisconsin’s 2025 class, it would bring the group’s total to three cornerbacks and give 11 of the program’s 14 official visitors since May 31 committed (three-star wide receiver Muiz Tunkara is still undecided). The only players Wisconsin has been unable to land are Gentry (so far), four-star edge Jaeden Woods (Penn State), four-star cornerback Rukeem Stroud (UCSF) and four-star edge Jaden Loftin (Tennessee).
FONG BOMB! The Badgers received projections from On3’s Steve WIltfong and Billy Emobdy to sign 6’0″ CB Zay Gentry from SMU to Wisconsin. That would be a big acquisition for the 25th class. LFG! #AboutWisconsin

Gentry becomes Wisconsin’s 23rd commitment in the class of 2025. The Badgers team is currently ranked 16th nationally and fifth in the new Big Ten.
With the cycle drawing to a close, transferring the talented cornerback out of SMU could be Wisconsin’s final big move with this class.
