Britons are encouraging investment in the latest technology to get more police officers on the streets and connect with the citizens they serve.
New York, June 26, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mark43, the leading provider of cloud-native community safety software, today announced new research revealing that UK residents strongly want police to equip themselves with modern, secure and resilient technology to keep them and their data safer.
The new research is based on an online survey of 1,062 UK residents conducted by Propeller Insight on behalf of Mark43 between 1 May and 13 May 2024, and finds that the vast majority (89%) support investment in technology that gives police greater freedom to engage with their communities, such as back-up call-handling systems in emergencies, precise location software and modern report writing systems. Nearly the same number (85%) say sharing data and information in real time with neighbouring police and partner agencies would better prevent and solve crime.
“Our new research shows that modernizing the technology police use holds great promise for freeing up police time for important operational priorities and creating safer communities.” Matthew Polega, Co-Founder and President of Mark43.
Residents support a strong and safe police system
-
The majority of residents (93%) would like their local police to have a backup emergency call system in case of a power outage, something that cloud-native technology can solve, with 67% of respondents saying it would give them more peace of mind in an emergency.
-
The same majority (93%) said they want their local public safety agency to use up-to-date software that updates in real time.
Modern technology can help overwhelmed police departments raise their profile and attract top talent.
-
The majority of respondents (86%) said they would like to see more police in their communities, with 78% saying they would specifically support increased awareness of crime prevention.
-
87% said increasing opportunities for police to engage with young people through community sports and school programs could help solve the recruitment problem.
Allowing police to spend more time in communities helps protect the most vulnerable.
-
The UK government is working to address issues such as violence against women and girls and has acknowledged this in its recent initiatives.
-
78% of Mark43 survey respondents said they want to ensure emergency responders are able to respond to these challenges effectively.
-
In fact, 75% of those surveyed said they would support new technology that would make this possible.
“Equipping police departments with a modern reporting and call-handling system will free up police officers from routine tasks, allowing more officers to return to their communities to do what they do best – keep residents safe,” Polega said.
Seniors are enthusiastic about the latest police technology
-
People of all ages say they want to see greater police presence in their communities, but this desire is especially prevalent among people 55 and older, 94% of whom say they want more police on the streets.
-
A smaller minority of those in the 18-24 age group feel this way: 69%.
-
Older generations are also the most likely to support increasing police budgets.
-
Nearly one-third (30%) of people aged 18-24 expressed support for increasing funding for the police.
-
Even more people over 45 (60%) support it.
-
A significant share of people ages 18-24 (42%) and even more people ages 65 and older (72%) support local police investing in a secondary, back-up call-handling system.
“When local police forces have access to the best technology, everyone benefits,” said Polega. “Enhanced reporting systems, like Mark43’s cloud-native recording system, enable local police forces to share data in real time, helping them better serve their communities and keep them safe. Mark43 is committed to providing the best community safety technology to police forces across the UK.”
Mark43 hosted its UK Supplier Day in London on 24th June 2024. At the event, attendees heard from Mark43 and Amazon Web Services about the current state of police and community safety technology in the UK.
Research Methodology
For the online survey, UK residents registered with an online database and were targeted based on demographics. To further verify eligibility, survey respondents were asked to self-report their eligibility and verify their information in the survey itself. The survey has a maximum sampling error of +/- 3 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
