The New York Jets are hoping Aaron Rodgers can improve a passing attack that ranked last in completions (18th), passing yards (30th), passing touchdowns (32nd) and first downs (27th) in 2023. With Rodgers back, the offense should improve dramatically.
The Jets have two of their three starting wide receivers locked down: Garrett Wilson will start on the outside and Mike Williams is hopeful he’ll be ready by Week 1 and will start on the opposite end once Wilson returns to the football field. Those two players will compete for the WR3 position.
The New York Jets have two players competing for the WR3 position.
The Jets have two players competing for the WR3/starting slot receiver role.
First up is Xavier Gipson, an undrafted free agent who was the team’s return specialist in his rookie season and excelled on the returns, returning 22 kicks for 511 yards and 33 punts for 319 yards and one touchdown.
Gipson took over as the starting slot receiver after the Jets benched Randall Cobb in Week 8. He did a decent job in the slot, catching 21 passes for 229 yards and rushing eight times for 68 yards and a touchdown.
The second player on the list is Malachi Corey. The third-round recruit played four seasons of college football for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, catching 259 passes for 3,035 yards and 29 touchdowns while being named to the All-Conference USA First Team twice.
So far, one player stands out.
This receiver is outstanding so far
Xavier Gipson impressed with the Jets throughout offseason training, and he was part of the first-team drills through OTAs and mandatory minicamp, taking an early lead, while Malachi Corey practiced with the second team.
Don’t count out the third-round pick just yet.
Gipson’s early averages don’t necessarily mean he’ll clinch a starting spot, since training camp hasn’t even started and players haven’t put on pads yet. We’ll have a clearer answer once players are in pads and have some practice in the preseason.
Don’t count Corey out just yet, there’s a reason they drafted him in the third round.
