The Indianapolis Colts tight ends had the ninth-most receiving yards in the NFL last season. The top three tight ends were Kylen Granson, Will Mallory and Mo’Alie Cox. Granson had 30 receptions for 368 yards (1 touchdown), Mallory had 18 receptions for 207 yards and Alie Cox had 13 receptions for 161 yards (3 touchdowns).

The Colts opted not to sign or draft a tight end this offseason, a decision that may be due in part to their confidence in the former third-round pick, who is set to sit out the entire 2023 season.

The former third-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts is fully recovered from the injury that caused him to miss the entire 2023 season.

Jelani Woods, Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods (80) catches a touchdown pass while being guarded by Kansas City Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill (22) during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Lucas Oil Stadium, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, in Indianapolis.

After a strong rookie season, Jelani Woods suffered a hamstring injury during voluntary workouts that will force him to miss most of training camp and the entire 2023 season. Woods has fully recovered from his injury and is feeling great.

“I’m starting to understand my body really well and I’m creating a daily routine to keep pushing myself, so I’m feeling really good (than I am in 2022),” Woods said. “I feel like I’m off to a good start right now, so I’m just hoping to keep it going and take it one day at a time, for the most part.”

Now that Woods is fully healthy, he will be competing for the TE1 spot, he is confident in his skills and knows he is in an important game.

“I know what I can do and how much I can contribute to the offense,” Woods said. “I know I can be a focal point of the offense and I’m just trying to prove it and earn back the respect and earn my spot back. I’m just trying to do whatever I can to show everybody that Jelani, he’s here.”

He will be competing with three other players for the starting tight end spot.

Player #1

Indianapolis Colts, Kylen Granson
Indianapolis Colts tight end Kylen Granson (83) dives for a reception while under defensive pressure from Tennessee Titans linebacker Azeez Al-Shair (2) at Nissan Stadium, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The first player to go is Kylen Granson. A fourth-round draft pick in 2021, Granson is entering his fourth year in the league. In 2023, he finished first among the team’s tight ends in receptions, targets, yards and snaps.

He will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season.

Player #2

Indianapolis Colts, Mo'Alie Cox
Indianapolis Colts tight end Mo’Alie Cox (81) reacts after making the two-point conversion catch during a game against the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium, Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, in Indianapolis.

The second player to start is Mo’Alie Cox. Playing primarily as a run blocker, Alie Cox is in his eighth year in the league. He finished third among the team’s tight ends in receptions, targets and yards, second in snaps and first in receiving touchdowns.

He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, and many view him as a player who could be cut during roster cuts.

Player #3

Indianapolis Colts, Will Mallory
Indianapolis Colts tight end Will Mallory (86) delivers a pass while being guarded by Atlanta Falcons safety DeMarco Hellams (37) and Atlanta Falcons linebacker Nate Landman (53) during a game against the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sunday, Dec. 24, 2023 in Atlanta.

The third player is Will Mallory. A fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, Mallory is in his second year in the league. He finished second among tight ends in receptions, targets and yards, and fourth in snaps.
