It’s not a huge secret that Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is having a big season. If things don’t go his way, such as beating Michigan and coming close to winning the national championship (and by close, I mean he’d have to coach in the Finals), he may be looking for a new job if he doesn’t accomplish both goals.
Ryan Day is entering his sixth season as the Buckeyes’ head coach, but many Ohio State fans aren’t sure how to feel about him. In his five years walking the sidelines in Columbus, he’s appeared in the College Football Playoff three times and the title game once, but has only won one game against arch rival Michigan and lost three times.

Ohio State has to find a way to beat Michigan this season, but there’s no excuse not to. Michigan has lost most of its players to the NFL, including starting quarterback JJ McCarthy and head coach Jim Harbaugh. Michigan still has some great players, but they won’t be the same team they have been the past three years. The Buckeyes will be their best team this season, and maybe in a long time.
Ryan Day has also made some new friends in the Big Ten this season in Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington. One team to watch is Oregon and its head coach, Dan Lanning. The Ducks are developing into a powerhouse and will be hosting Ohio State this season. Day can’t let the Ducks beat his team and win the Big Ten.
Ryan Day feels the most pressure
Day has been under a lot of pressure this season, with On3.com’s Jesse Simonton ranking him as the No. 1 coach in his Big Ten coaching pressure rankings.
Simonton said Coach Day is under extreme pressure and said this about the Buckeyes head coach:
Extreme? For a coach who’s 56-8? Yes. That’s the unique pressure Day faces after losing three straight times to Michigan and watching rival Team Up North win the championship in 2023.
Ohio State has put all its effort into this season, adding some top transfers through the portal and returning nearly a dozen starters with NFL prospects. Day, who has stepped back from play-calling duties and taken a CEO-like approach to his head coaching role, will face intense criticism and backlash if he doesn’t win a Big Ten title and beyond with this roster.
Another loss to Michigan could cost him his job, which may seem impossible for a head coach with fewer than double-digit career losses.
Much has been made about the immense pressure Day is under, and while this is just the Big Ten Conference pressure list, he may be under more pressure than any coach in college football.
