TRENDING: Ohio State quarterback Will Howard has already proven he understands Buckeye football and its expectations, unlike last year’s starter Kyle McCord

Many Buckeye fans weren’t sure how to feel when Ohio State starting quarterback Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal late last season. He led the team to an 11-1 record and nearly beat Michigan, but he didn’t seem to understand Ohio State football and what it’s all about.

Before last year’s game against Michigan, McCord said “it’s just a game,” something that should never happen between rival teams. Ohio State and Michigan fans don’t take their rivalry lightly, so hearing McCord say “it’s just a game” lost a lot of love for him in Columbus.

Ohio State won 35-16.

McCord heads east to Syracuse, and the Buckeyes acquired Will Howard from Kansas State. He and Devin Brown will compete for the starting spot this season, but from what Howard has said about this season, it seems like he knows what it takes to be a starter at Ohio State.

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard (18) waves to fans after Saturday’s Ohio State Life Sports spring football game at Ohio Stadium.

Howard visited the Manning Passing Academy last week and had high praise for the Ohio State Buckeyes this season. He said, “It’s natural or no for us. I mean, there’s no question in my mind.”

It’s a good thing Howard isn’t taking any games this season lightly, and if the starting quarterback expects this season to be either a national championship or failure, the rest of the team will likely follow his lead.

There’s a good chance Howard won’t say “it’s just a game” during Michigan Week this year. Buckeye fans should be thrilled that Howard can be the starting quarterback this fall, but he’ll have to earn the position in August first.
