Ohio State has had a big offseason, returning some star players and using the transfer portal to add key players like University of Mississippi running back Quinshon Judkins and Alabama safety Caleb Downs. The Buckeyes are considered one of the best teams in the country this season and should be competing for a championship in January, but one major media outlet believes Ohio State doesn’t even have a top-three roster in the league.

The ESPN College Football Power Index ratings released their list of the best teams in college football this season, and the Buckeyes came in at No. 4. The FPI is wrong. The Buckeyes have the top two players in the sport, and only Georgia can currently compete with them. Of course, there are question marks at quarterback for Ohio State, with Kansas State transfer Will Howard likely to be the starter.
The Buckeyes also have question marks on their offensive line that they can hopefully solve or risk losing out early in the playoffs, but they still have the best defense in the country, the best running backs and are close to having the best wide receivers.
ESPN is covering another Big Ten Conference team over Ohio State, and the Buckeyes will face that team in October, likely again in the Big Ten Conference finals, to compete on the field.
Oregon is No. 2
The Ducks are fielding a team this year in their first season as a member of the Big Ten. They are led by one of the best coaches in the sport in Dan Lanning and have maybe the best quarterback in college football in Dillon Gabriel, so it will be interesting to see how they perform in their first season in a new conference.
There’s no reason to rank them higher than Ohio State, but at the end of the day, these two schools will face each other this season, so it doesn’t matter.
