The Los Angeles Chargers offensive line struggled last season, ranking 16th overall. Hehe. As a result of those struggles, the Chargers selected the best offensive lineman in the draft, Joe Alto, with the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. A left tackle in college, Alto switched positions this offseason and is likely to start at right tackle in 2024.
Their starting RT from last season did not perform well in the 2023 campaign.

After a strong 2022 season, the Chargers signed Trey Pipkins III to a three-year, $21.75 million contract extension during the 2023 offseason. Pipkins was once again the starter at right back. Unfortunately, he struggled last season with 49 pressures, 32 hurries, eight hits, nine sacks, seven penalties and a PFF rating of 62.8.
Pipkins changed positions in the offseason as the team drafted Joe Alt in the first round.
Trey Pipkins III takes on new position
Pipkins moved to right guard this offseason. He’s never played guard in the NFL, having played most of his college career as a tackle. He’ll receive first-team practice at right guard during OTAs and mandatory minicamp and have a chance to earn a starting spot.
Jim Harbaugh praised Pipkins.
“He’s very capable of doing that,” Harbaugh said of Pipkins. “He’s a great player, a great tackle, a great guard.”
He will be facing a player who has started twice.
The versatile Los Angeles Chargers offensive lineman will also be in the mix.
Jamaree Salyer will also be competing for a starting spot. A sixth-round pick in 2022, Salyer will be in his third year in the league. After Rashawn Slater suffered a torn biceps tendon in Week 3 of 2022, Salyer took over as the starting left guard and earned the starting right guard spot in 2023.
Salyer took a slight step back last season with 41 pressures, 25 hurries, eight hits, eight sacks, three penalties and a PFF grade of 54.2.
Given Salyer’s ability as a tackle, the Chargers may start Pipkins at RG as Salyer can function as a swing tackle.
