It’s been four years since Auburn University’s football program has won more than seven games in a season, a far cry from the glory days of the mid-2000s and early 2010s. But with Auburn heading into year two of the promising Hugh Freeze era next fall, buoyed by a talented freshman class and a slew of talented transfers, there’s hope and optimism for the future. But former head coach and now-Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville and 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton have both been generating surprising amounts of attention this offseason.
A month after Tuberville came under fire for an old recruiting scandal from his time on the Auburn football team, Newton has now taken to social media to vocally support one of the NFL’s most criticized quarterbacks. On Friday, Newton spoke on his podcast, “4th & 1,” speaking for Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who is in the final season of his four-year, $160 million contract. Newton last played in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers in 2021, struggling with efficiency as the NFC South team finished 5-12.
Former Auburn University football QB expresses support for Dallas Cowboys QB Dake Prescott
Longtime NFL quarterback and Auburn University football star Cam Newton was outspoken about Dallas Cowboys franchise passer Dak Prescott. On his popular podcast, “4th & 1,” Newton expressed his respect for Prescott after a graph revealed that Prescott’s numbers (over his last 50 starts) were eerily similar to those of three-time Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“If you can match Patrick Mahomes’ stats, something’s going right,” Newton said of the statistical similarities between Prescott and Mahomes over their past 50 starts. Prescott and Mahomes have the same number of passing touchdowns over their past 50 starts, but Prescott has one fewer interception while also having a slightly better completion percentage.
Meanwhile, Newton compared Prescott to the 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, suggesting his future salary should surpass that of many others. “So if I’m judging Dak Prescott’s playoff success here, I’m looking at a list of guys with no playoff experience, no playoff wins,” Newton continued. “I prefer Dak Prescott over Kirk Cousins. I prefer Dak over Kyler Murray. I prefer Dak over Jalen Hurts. Justin Herbert? Dak. Trevor Lawrence? I’ll take Dak.”
Cam Newton and Dak Prescott: Quarterback showdown
Newton began his collegiate career with the Florida Gators, but finally found his footing with the Auburn University football program in 2010. Newton spent one year with the Tigers, rushing for 2,854 yards, 30 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while leading the SEC club to an undefeated season. Newton was also dominant on the ground, winning the Heisman Trophy with 1,473 yards rushing and 20 scores, leading Auburn to its first title since 1957. The two-way player was the No. 1 pick in the ensuing draft, and after throwing 35 touchdowns he was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. Newton’s peak was short-lived, but included an MVP season and a Super Bowl appearance in 2013.
Like Newton, Prescott also showed off his dual-threat abilities during his four seasons with the Mississippi State Bulldogs from 2012-2015. Prescott rushed for 41 touchdowns and passed for nearly 10,000 yards. However, despite his immense success in college, Prescott had to wait until the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys. Also, like Newton, Prescott won the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award in his first season. Prescott received MVP votes last season, but fell short to Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson.
