Toine Rodenburg is an e-commerce expert, entrepreneur and international investor. Originally from the Netherlands, Toine Rodenburg is deeply involved in the emerging business trend of e-commerce and co-founded MyMalls, a leading e-commerce delivery company serving Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Outside of work, Toyn is an avid traveller and currently lives in Lisbon, Portugal, where he enjoys sailing, hiking, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and restoring antique Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Q: What prompted you to enter the e-commerce space so early on?

Toyn Rodenburg: As the saying goes, I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time when the Internet was just starting to take off. A colleague approached me with an investment opportunity in an online company and I thought it was a great idea. I put some money into it and it turned out to be much better than I expected. That experience inspired me to explore the space further. The ability to reach people around the world and streamline business operations was groundbreaking and I was excited to be a part of that revolution.

Q: How did your early career experiences influence your approach to business?

Toyn Rodenburg: My early career was full of successes and failures. Running a youth tennis camp taught me leadership and management skills, while my experience as a logistics and marketing manager in Paris helped me understand the dynamics of the business world. Before I discovered e-commerce, I even tried to start a TV production company. Although it ultimately didn’t work out, it taught me about entrepreneurship and the value of resilience and adaptability. All these experiences taught me lessons that still serve me well today.

Q: Tell us about your experience founding your latest venture, MyMalls.

Toyn Rodenburg: MyMalls was born from a desire to solve a common problem in the e-commerce world: reliable and efficient delivery to underserved regions. We saw a huge demand for premium delivery services in Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and we aimed to fill that gap. My other co-founders and I believed that by using cutting-edge technology and building a strong logistics network, we could provide a superior service to improve the online shopping experience for customers in these regions. Thanks to careful planning and hard work, our plan was a success.

Q: You’ve been a very successful investor for many years. What do you think are the key qualities of a successful investor?

Toyn Rodenburg: Successful investors need to have a keen eye for market trends and the ability to distinguish true opportunities from passing fads. Patience and the ability to perform due diligence are also crucial. It goes without saying that the more you know about your investments, the better prepared you are to make informed decisions. Any seasoned investor will tell you this, but personally, I think it’s also essential to be adaptable and willing to learn from both successes and failures. One thing I’ve learned throughout my career is that the business environment is constantly changing, so continuous learning and flexibility are key.

Q: As a self-proclaimed world traveler, how do you balance your work with your passion for travel and adventure?

Toyn Rodenburg: I am very lucky and the nature of my job allows me to set my own schedule, with of course exceptions. But many of my business meetings are conducted virtually via video conferencing software, so if I want to take a week or two off, I can usually do so easily, as long as I can connect to Wi-Fi when I need to. On the other hand, if I want to travel to a more secluded place without all the conveniences and amenities of modern technology, it takes a bit more planning.
