Jacksonville, Florida – Jacksonville is in the spotlight, and self-driving cars are becoming a reality.

Florida State University Jacksonville has introduced driverless vehicles to transport students to and from campus.

The developer of this technology has local connections, as Kent Justice revealed on the latest episode of “This Week in Jacksonville: Business Edition.”

Joe Moye comes from a Navy family who served in Mayport and stayed in town.

Previous episode: Looking at the momentum and growth of downtown

Moye currently runs Beep, a company that develops self-driving cars for use by the Jacksonville Transit Authority.

“We specialize in deploying purpose-built autonomous multi-person electric shuttles,” Moyet said. “Essentially, by providing an alternative to personal transportation, or more importantly, by providing an alternative to people who don’t have an alternative or who don’t have other transportation options. It’s about changing the way people move in society.”

Moyet explained the vision behind bringing this project to River City.

“So, that’s the mainline service for downtown areas like Jacksonville, campuses, medical campuses, academic campuses, business campuses airports. When you think about that type of movement, that’s exactly what we’re doing with both technology and vehicle platforms. “It’s something we’re trying to realize in a tangible way,” he said.

What are the connections to Jacksonville’s transportation future? What are the challenges?

“This Week in Jacksonville: Business Edition” explores these questions in more detail.
