To celebrate the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics and raise public awareness of the importance of quantum science and its applications, the United Nations has declared 2025 the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology”.
We totally agree. It’s really amazing how much quantum innovation is happening right now. Photonics plays a big role and we’re trying to cover as much of it as we can.
In this issue Quantum InnovatorThis week’s cover story features the amazingly cool research of a quantum memory drum by Professor Albert Schliesser’s group at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Mads Bjerregaard Christensen, a postdoc who worked on the project, shared his findings and the cover image with us.
We are excited to have Eric Mounier from Yole Group share the highlights of their company’s recent quantum technology report and why now is the time to invest in quantum technologies, while Daniel Oi from the University of Strathclyde and the UK Quantum Communications Hub will detail quantum milestones in space and explain what the future holds for space-based quantum communications.
We have a little bit of everything here: quantum dots on semiconductors, lasers that make materials magnetic, the role of fiber optic cables in quantum networks, femtosecond lasers that create optical qubits in silicon, several quantum network demos, tools to characterize light-based quantum states, the world’s first photonic topological quantum insulator, and an introduction to one of the coolest quantum-inspired startups: LightSolver.
We are extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to this issue or shared their exciting quantum research with us.
