The smallest people who ever lived

One by one, they came to a courtroom in lower Manhattan, hats in hand, throwing away all shame from thousands of miles away, and prostrated themselves in front of microphones and reporters on behalf of the naked Emperor.

They denounced his criminal trial as unfair, a false accusation, an abuse of the American justice system, and hypocrisy — and they roared with such false passion that porn actors (possibly hired by their cult leader to cover up his affairs) looked on in awe.

From Alabama, Steve Marshall, Tommy Tuberville and Dale Strong appeared and danced like fools’ puppets. Barry Moore would have been gone by now if he could have found a way. No doubt others will follow.

Because this is what happens in a cult: you have to obey the leader, you have to support the leader, you have to pretend that the leader is never wrong.

Even if you know full well that what you are saying is so ridiculous and nonsense that little children would not believe it, it would be good if you could communicate this to little children.

Unfortunately, you can’t. Especially in Alabama, where a librarian in Alabama could be jailed for reading to children if a single page details the events that led to Donald John Trump’s trial.

Because this former president is a loathsome, repulsive, 91-time indicted felon, failed coup leader, who had sex with a porn star just weeks after his wife gave birth to their son, and then tried to cover up the affair by paying her hush money. Though Mr. Trump denies it, there is no question in my mind that this happened. The only legal question is whether the method of payment violated the law.

Legal experts are debating whether it was illegal, and the fate of the Nazi sympathizer appears to depend on the interpretation of some key exchanges with his former lawyer. Indeed, most lawyers agree that the payment method may have violated the law.

But that didn’t stop cultists from continuing their pilgrimage to Manhattan, nor did they hesitate in their attempts to undermine the American justice system in what Marshall argued was the worst abuse of the courts in the last 30 years.

We should pause here to remember that Marshall and Strong live in Alabama, home to Toforest Johnson, who was convicted of murder by eyewitness testimony and is currently on death row, and it would be nice if either of them showed even a fraction of their passion for justice when they spoke about the child labor abuses throughout the state and the gun violence epidemic in Alabama.

Or maybe it’s just not that small.

Honestly, it’s pathetic to watch these adults wallow and play dog pranks for Trump. Fortunately, the man is embroiled in a porn star compensation case, and the courthouse square is buzzing like a Roman crucifix. He looks disgusting.

And embarrassing. For all of us.

Because while you may be fooling the idiots who vote for that crazy insurrectionist, you’re not fooling anyone else. I think most of you are familiar with it. We know you know what you’re saying is untrue, harmful, and downright shameful.

We know you say it because you are scared and weak, we know you say it because you want personal gain, despite the fact that it is damaging to the country you claim to love, and we know that greater and better men and women have taken a stand and proudly experienced the consequences of speaking truth to an ignorant mob, and they will be remembered kindly by history.

But not all of you are like that. No, some of you may not have a special place in history, but we will all know the truth. Some of us will remember.

When the time was right, when the cards were laid out on the table, when the nation was calling on its leaders to step up and tell the plain truth, the smallest men in history did exactly what we would expect them to do.
