According to Microsoft, startups around the world are using machine learning and AI to create tools and solutions across an increasingly wide range of industries.
Basecamp Research: Advancing Bioscience with AI
Biologists and explorers Glenn Gowers and Oliver Vince embarked on a groundbreaking expedition to sequence the DNA of Iceland’s microbes in 2019. Their findings led to the founding of Basecamp Research, a London-based startup that aims to build the world’s largest database of natural biodiversity. The company uses AI and machine learning to advance bioscience and partners with nature parks and research institutions in 27 countries.
Basecamp Research has developed knowledge graphs that organize data and show relationships among billions of data points. This approach has enabled the company to create deep learning models for applications such as gene editing systems and enzymes for food production. The company’s deep learning model, BaseFold, predicts the 3D structures of large proteins more accurately than existing models.
Plan Heal: AI-powered health monitoring
Chicago-based Plan Heal offers an AI-powered solution to help patients monitor their health metrics. Founded in 2022 by Tammy McMiller, the company aims to empower patients and healthcare providers by using AI to analyze health data and flag potential issues. The platform integrates with electronic health record systems to help healthcare providers deliver proactive care.
Plan Heal’s Azure-powered Smart Health Assessment has shown promising early results: Patients who used the assessment have had more engaging conversations with their healthcare providers and received care services they wouldn’t have received otherwise. McMiller believes AI can play a key role in helping people track their health and identify potentially life-threatening conditions earlier.
Haut.AI: Generative AI for Skincare
Anastasia Georgievskaya co-founded Haut.AI in 2018 to provide an AI-based skin diagnostic tool. The company uses selfies to assess skin metrics and recommend personalized products. The company’s latest product, SkinGPT, uses generative AI to simulate skin changes over time based on product usage.
Haut.AI’s algorithms are trained on a combination of experimental and synthetic data, enabling accurate assessments across different population groups and environmental conditions. The platform has around 90 clients, several of which are using the technology in their research and development.
Weights and Biases: Tools for AI Developers
Founded in 2017 by Lukas Biewald and Chris Van Pelt, Weights & Biases provides tools to help AI developers manage their workflows and build models faster. Their platform allows users to track and visualize experiments, save models, and share results with collaborators.
Since ChatGPT’s release, demand for the platform has increased and the customer base has expanded to over 1,000 companies across a variety of sectors. Weights & Biases is used for applications such as drug discovery, autonomous vehicle development, and improved healthcare.
As AI continues to evolve, startups like Basecamp Research, Plan Heal, Haut.AI, and Weights & Biases are pioneering the use of technology to solve complex problems across multiple industries.
