June has already been a big recruiting month for Oklahoma’s wide receiver corps. With just two players at the position coming into the spring, the Sooners needed to make a move to acquire their top target, and they have done just that.
Emmett Jones recruited two four-star recruits this month, landing the star player from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei. Marcus Harris The Lancaster (Texas) star on an official visit Emmanuel Choice That’s above Texas A&M, TCU and USC.
While the choice wasn’t much of a surprise, Harris certainly was. He scheduled his official visit within 24 hours of arriving in Norman and committed on the spot. Jones and company also had their eye on one other prize: a four-star wide receiver from Homestead, Fla. Cortez Mills.
Mills, the nation’s No. 15 ranked wide receiver, took official visits to Oklahoma, Florida, Nebraska, Clemson and Louisiana State this spring and summer. While the hometown Gators were often considered the biggest threat to land him, it’s the Sooners that are garnering the most attention in the On3 Recruiting Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) ahead of the July 1 announcement.
That’s in line with expert projections from On3 director of recruiting Chad Simmons, OU recruit Josh McQuistion, Nebraska insider Brian Munson and Florida State insider Michael Langston.
“Oklahoma appears to be racing Clemson to the finish line,” McQuistion wrote Friday. “The Tigers, long considered the leaders throughout the spring, Emmett Jones We’ve made great strides over the past few months.
… The Sooners appear to have a slight lead, but nothing is certain until the game is over.”
Relationships and development are key for Mills
Earlier this week, Mills told Simmons he is still considering his options but knows what he wants at a school at the next level.
“I’m still thinking about these schools and which one is best for me,” he said. “I still have to figure out some things. When it comes to making a decision it’s going to come down to who I can trust the most, who I feel will help me develop on and off the field and where I feel most comfortable. I’m working on figuring that out this week.”
The 6-foot-5, 165-pound Mills is the nation’s No. 109 prospect, No. 15 wide receiver and No. 17 player out of Florida in the 2025 cycle. On3 Industry Rankings — A weighted average utilizing all four of the biggest hiring media companies.
Mills was named the On3 MVP at the Under Armour Miami camp in March, according to Charles Power, On3’s director of scouting and rankings. He wrote about Mills’ performance:.
“Cortez Mills Mills was the clear standout among Under Armour Miami’s deep wide receiver corps. At 6’1″ and 170 pounds, he made some of the best pass-catching plays in drills and one-on-ones. Though he dominated his few one-on-ones, we didn’t see Mills effectively covered all day. Mills has a smooth technique with a natural sway in his route. He consistently shakes off defenders at the stem of his route. We saw him snap the ankles of two defensive backs in one-on-ones. Mills then made a spectacular contested catch, leaping over the corner to make a high-point catch. It was perhaps the most impressive catch we saw all day.“
