NEW YORK, June 24 (Jiji Press) — Sony Music Entertainment and two other major record labels on Monday jointly filed a lawsuit against a U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) startup company for using songs by their artists without permission.
Sony Music Entertainment Group, Universal Music Group, and labels under Warner Records, all of which are subsidiaries of Japan’s Sony Group, are seeking damages, alleging that startups Sano and Uncharted Labs infringed copyrights by using large amounts of music to train their AI without permission.
The plaintiffs could be seeking billions of dollars, according to business news provider Bloomberg. The lawsuits have been filed in multiple federal district courts in the United States.
In their complaint, the plaintiffs allege that Suno and Uncharted Labs illegally copied music for the purposes of generative AI training, rendering artists unable to create creative works.
The startup claimed users of its service could create a performance that closely resembled US singer Mariah Carey’s hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
