Skytrax’s Best Low-Cost Airlines

  • Airline ratings company Skytrax has released its 2024 list of the world’s best low-cost airlines.
  • AirAsia has been named the world’s top low-cost airline for the 15th consecutive year.
  • Allegiant Air is the highest-ranked U.S. airline on this list.

AirAsia has been named the world’s best low-cost airline, according to a traveller survey conducted by travel industry ratings firm Skytrax.

Skytrax released its latest survey results in June as part of its 2024 World Airline Awards, naming Qatar Airways the best airline in the world.

The ranking, compiled by Skytrax based on feedback from travellers in over 100 countries across more than 350 airlines, saw European and British budget airlines take nine of the top 20 spots.

Major US low-cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines did not make the top 20.

Let’s take a closer look at the top 20 best low-cost airlines in the world, according to Skytrax.

20. Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country operates a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft from its Minneapolis base to leisure destinations throughout the U.S., the Caribbean and Central America.

Sun Country Airlines is ranked 89th on Skytrax’s list of the world’s top 100 airlines.

19. Jetstar Asia

Jetstar Asia is the Singapore-based subsidiary of Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways, a subsidiary of Qantas.

18. Allegiant Air

Allegiant Air is the highest-ranked U.S.-based low-cost airline on the list, coming in at number 18. The Las Vegas-based leisure airline operates the Airbus A320 family of aircraft but is set to take delivery of the highly anticipated Boeing 737MAX aircraft later this year.

Ultra-low-cost airline JetSmart operates a fleet of Airbus A320 Family aircraft to destinations across South America from its headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

Sky Airlines won the award for Best Low-Cost Airline in South America, marking the fourth time the Chilean airline has won the award.

15. Jetstar Airways

Jetstar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qantas, has been named the top low-cost airline in the Australia/Oceania region. Jetstar operates a fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft and Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body jets.

14. Eurowings

Eurowings is a low-cost airline of the German Lufthansa Group. The airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft across Europe and the Middle East.

13. Jet2.com

12. Flydubai

EasyJet is the UK’s top low-cost airline, according to the latest Skytrax rankings.

10. Ryanair

Dublin-based Ryanair is perhaps the world’s best-known budget airline, best known for its laughably low prices and stingy business practices. The Irish airline is also one of the world’s largest airlines, operating a fleet of Boeing 737s.

9. Iberia Express

Iberia Express is the low-cost airline of Iberia, the national airline of Spain. As such, it is one of the airlines that make up the International Airlines Group (IAG), along with British Airways, Aer Lingus, and fellow Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling.

8. AirBaltic

airBaltic operates a fleet consisting entirely of Airbus A220s. The Latvian low-cost airline was one of the first airlines in the world to introduce the Canadian jet aircraft and remains one of the largest operators of the aircraft today.

7. Vueling Airlines

Vueling is Spain’s largest low-cost airline. Like Spain’s flag carrier Iberia, Vueling is a subsidiary of IAG, along with British Airways and Aer Lingus.

6. Indigo

IndiGo is a leading low-cost carrier in India and one of the world’s largest operators of Airbus A320 family aircraft. In 2023, the airline began trial operations of long-haul international flights with two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft leased from Turkish Airlines.

5. Transavia France

Transavia France is a low-cost airline subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group.

4. Flynas

Saudi Arabia’s Flynas is ranked the best low-cost airline in the Middle East by Skytrax. Founded in 2007, the airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft.

3. Volotea

Spain’s Volotea is the highest-ranked of the nine European airlines on the list. The airline operates a fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft on flights throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.

2. Scoot

Singapore’s Scoot is the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. The airline has won the award for World’s Best Long-haul Low-cost Airline.

AirAsia has been the world’s top low-cost airline for 15 consecutive years. The Malaysia-based airline and its subsidiaries across Southeast Asia operate an all-Airbus fleet.
