Brussels 24/06/18 – Europe’s biomethane sector stands to receive an injection of €25 billion in private investment by 2030, a 30% increase compared to 2015, according to analysis published today by the European Biogas Association (EBA). Last year’s estimate. The secondand The latest edition of the Biomethane Investment Outlook predicts that there is an additional €2.1 billion in investments in the pipeline but not yet allocated.
Planned investments by 2030 will see the installation of 950 new biomethane plants across Europe. Alongside 1,300 facilities already in operation. This could add 6.3 billion cubic metres (bcm) of biomethane capacity per year to the continent, helping to avoid around 29 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.2 It reduces annual emissions by 25%, supplies 5 million European homes with renewable energy all year round and produces 830,000 tonnes of fertiliser per year.
Investments will be concentrated mainly in Denmark (€3.6 billion), Poland (€3.4 billion) and Italy (€2.4 billion).In Denmark, the share of biomethane in the gas supply network has reached nearly 40%, and there are plans to increase production to replace 100% of gas demand by 2030.
Two years into the REPowerEU plan, the industry is mobilizing rapidly to meet the biomethane production target of 35 billion cubic metres by 2030. Investment is essential to unlock the full potential of biomethane production and streamline the development of new plants across Europe..
Aligning the EU taxonomy with REPowerEU’s biomethane targets will help direct capital towards this sector.The EU Taxonomy plays an important role in encouraging green investments, but challenges remain in implementing the screening criteria. To secure the announced investments, it is essential to implement aligned policies, maintain a stable regulatory framework and promote the long-term end-use of biomethane and its by-products.
