“At approximately 9 a.m. on April 22nd, a U.S. Secret Service special agent who was assisting the Vice President’s departure from Joint Base Andrews was informed that his colleagues felt uncomfortable,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. He started acting like that.” “The agent was removed from duty while medical personnel were called.”
The statement did not address media reports that the agent got into an altercation with another agent and had to be handcuffed before being taken away for medical evaluation. The Washington Examiner first reported on the altercation.
Harris departed Joint Base Andrew late Monday and headed to Wisconsin without incident.
“The vice president was at the Naval Observatory when this incident occurred, but his departure from Joint Base Andrews was not affected,” Guglielmi said. “The U.S. Secret Service takes the safety and health of its employees very seriously. Because this is a medical matter, we will not provide further details.”
White House officials declined to comment.
