As the UK votes in its general election, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is trending on Google Trends, alongside Conservative leader Keir Starmer and the Labour Party.
British politics is dominated by the Conservative and Labour parties, who have been in power for 14 years and have had five prime ministers in that time.
The keyword “Rishi Sunak” was ranked eighth on Google’s real-time trends in India on Thursday. User interest began at 1:30 pm on June 27 this year and peaked on July 4, when the UK will decide the fate of the Conservative Party.
Today, millions of people will vote to elect a 650-member lower house of parliament. The party that wins the most seats in the country’s single-member constituency system will form the new government.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is seeking a second term in power after succeeding Liz Truss in her short-lived government and is Britain’s first non-white prime minister.
The day before the vote, he posted on Instagram, “This election will determine the future of our country.”
In the next few lines he contrasts his government with a Labour-led government: “Labour will raise taxes, or I will lower taxes. Labour will increase immigration, or I will reduce immigration. Labour will increase crime, or I will make our streets safer.”
“We have less than 17 hours to save the UK from a Labour supermajority,” Sunak stressed.
Opposition leader Keir Starmer also posted a video on Instagram ahead of the UK vote, sharing it with the caption: “This is what change looks like”.
“We stand here on the eve of the election as a changed Labour party, one that has put the protests aside and is back to being a party that serves working people, proudly saying country first, party second,” Starmer says in the video.
He added: “This is our chance not just to rebuild the NHS but to make it fit for the future – to ensure that all young people have everything they need – the skills, opportunities, housing and safety – to fulfil their talents.”
“This is our chance to raise living standards across the country and make our economy work for everyone, wherever you live. Public services are working again. We have been reset and we stand tall on the international stage. Imagine a Britain moving forward with a Labour government. That’s what we are fighting for. Let’s keep up the fight. If you want change you must vote. Vote Labour,” Starmer further said.
