The Federal Government announced at the weekend that it would sue the Daily Trust newspaper over its reporting on the signing of the Samoa Agreement.
The agreement has been controversial due to concerns it could advance LGBTQ rights.
Daily Trust reported that some Nigerian clerics, human rights activists and civil society groups have been outraged by the Federal Government’s decision to sign the controversial agreement. However, in a press conference on Saturday, the Federal Government reiterated that the agreement it signed was only aimed at the economic development of the country and that nowhere in the agreement was there any mention of LGBTQ+ or same-sex marriage.
The Minister of Information and National Policy, Mohammed Idris, said at a press conference that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration tolerates criticism from the media but will not tolerate anything that undermines national security. Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, has been in the eye of a storm after a video went viral of him ordering his security forces to slap and dispose of an Islamic cleric who offered to offer a closing prayer at a memorial service for the deputy governor’s late wife in Minna, Niger State, over the weekend.
The governor, seen in the video, ordered his security operatives to arrest the cleric. Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is encouraging Nigerians to farm. In a post on X over the weekend, Tinubu revealed photos of her farming in her garden and encouraging women to participate in the “Every-Home-A-Garden” competition, which aims to instill the practice of farming and food production in society as a family unit and promote healthy eating.
While unveiling her vegetable garden at the Presidential Palace, the first lady told reporters that women should take the lead in the country’s food security campaign.
This comes after a Federal High Court in Lagos, in a ruling reported by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, ordered former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadia Umar Farouq, to explain the payment of 729 billion naira to 24.3 million poor Nigerians over a six-month period.
The judgement was handed down last month, according to SERAP. The court also ordered the former minister to submit a list and details of the beneficiaries who received the payments, and to explain the basis for paying 5,000 naira to 24.3 million poor Nigerians, which represents 5 percent of Nigeria’s 2021 budget of 13.6 trillion naira.
