Red Bull driver rumours end with new two-year deal for Sergio Pérez

Red Bull have confirmed that Sergio Pérez will remain with the team for the next two seasons, ending speculation over their 2025 line-up.

There had been much speculation about Perez’s future following a struggling 2023 season and subsequent stagnation in 2024, but Red Bull maintained faith in the Mexican driver and penned a new contract.

Red Bull announces new F1 contract with Sergio Pérez for 2025 and 2026

Perez has started the 2024 season well, helping Red Bull achieve one-two finishes behind Max Verstappen in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Japan, but has failed to reach the podium in the last three races.

Despite this, there has never been any real suggestion that Red Bull is looking for a replacement for Perez, whose Mexican origin brings significant sponsorship to the team.

He said: “I’m really happy to commit my future to this great team. This is a challenge like no other for Oracle Red Bull Racing, both on and off the track. I’m happy to stay here, continue the journey together and contribute to this team’s great history for another two years.”

“Being part of a team is a big challenge but I love it. There are big challenges ahead this year. I’m sure the whole team has a bright future and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

“I want to thank everyone for the trust they have in me, it means a lot and I want to repay that trust with great results on and off the track. I think we have a lot of work to do and there are still many championships to win together.”

“Now is an important time to finalise our 2025 line-up and we are very pleased to continue our collaboration with Checo,” Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said.

“Continuity and stability are important to the team and Checo and Max have a successful and strong partnership that delivered the team’s first ever one-two finish in the championship last year.

“Checo has started 2024 well, with second places in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Japan, as well as a podium in China. The last few races have been tough and there has been some crowded action on the grid, but we are confident in Checo and look forward to seeing him return to the proven form and performance we have always seen from him.”

“Last year was a unicorn season and we’ll need to work hard to defend our title, but we have confidence in our line-up and the whole team, which is vital with this year’s championship looking like it’s going to be a close one.”

Perez, who made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2011, originally joined Red Bull as Alex Albon’s replacement for the 2021 F1 season, becoming the first driver signed from outside the team’s own talent pool since Mark Webber in 2007.

The Mexican driver needed just six races to give Red Bull its first win in Baku, with Pérez having a major influence on Verstappen’s maiden title win.

Perez added two more wins in 2022, on the streets of Monaco and Singapore, before making his best start to a season in 2023 by winning two of the first four races in Jeddah and Baku.

Perez was just six points behind Verstappen after the 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but his season took a nosedive after making it into Q3 just once in the six races that followed, putting his place at the team in serious jeopardy.

Despite growing calls to promote Daniel Ricciardo alongside Verstappen for the second half of 2023, Red Bull have backed Perez, who has delivered four podiums in the opening five F1 races of 2024.

News of Perez staying provides some stability for Red Bull, which announced last month that design guru Adrian Newey would leave the Milton Keynes-based team at the start of the 2025 F1 season, ending a 19-year tenure with the team.
