Quincy University announced the creation of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which will serve as a resource for faculty and students and provide experiential learning opportunities beyond the walls of the classroom. The center offers interdisciplinary programs and provides professional development, seminars, events, and courses for alumni and the community.

“Entrepreneurial thinking and skills complement and extend research and practice not only in business but also in many other fields such as the arts, science and technology, human services, humanities, and education,” said Dean and said Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sarah Voldtriede Patton. Chairperson in charge of academic affairs. “Entrepreneurial initiative and innovation are key elements in our rapidly changing economy and in our current and future world.”

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is made possible by a generous gift from QU alumni Mike ’72 and Carol (Hughes) Hennessy ’73.

“We have been supporting entrepreneurship and self-employment education for quite some time,” the Hennessys said. “Some of our most impactful programs have been at small liberal arts schools like QU. I’m helping people build strong connections. It’s very encouraging!”

The Hennessy family has been a generous supporter of the university for many years and was named Quincy University’s Alumni of the Year in 2013. Mike served as an officer and director of Fannie Mae Candy Shops for many years. He also served as president and CEO of the Coleman Foundation, which focused on education, cancer, and developmental disabilities. He retired in 2021 after more than 30 years of service. Carol is a watercolor artist and has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is president of the Watercolor Honor Society and a board member of the Illinois Watercolor Society.

Founded in 1860 by Franciscan friars, Quincy University is a small Catholic university with a focus on the sciences, liberal arts, and professional fields. Quincy University offers undergraduate, graduate, and adult education programs that integrate hands-on experience and Franciscan values. Faculty and advisors work with students to develop a customized success plan to help students graduate on time, find their passion, and prepare for life. QU is a member of NCAA Division II in intercollegiate athletics.
