Weeks after the Gulf state held elections, Kuwait’s emir has dissolved parliament and taken over some of its duties, state media reported.

The prime minister said in a speech broadcast on state television on Friday that Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah and a cabinet appointed by the king would take over some powers of the 50-member parliament. Stated.

It also suspended some unspecified provisions of the constitution “for a period of up to four years,” although the details were not disclosed.

“The unhealthy atmosphere that Kuwait has experienced so far has allowed widespread corruption to spread to most state institutions, and unfortunately has also affected the security and economic institutions,” the 83-year-old ruler said. , adding, “It is even affecting state power in Kuwait.” The judicial system.”

“We have faced unacceptable challenges and obstacles,” he said.

The April elections were the first under Sheikh Mishal, who took power in December after the death of his half-brother and predecessor, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.

Repeated disputes between parliament and the cabinet have led to the dissolution of parliament and curbed investment and reforms aimed at reducing dependence on oil revenues.

Parliament was scheduled to meet for the first time on Monday, but several politicians refused to join the government.

The Prime Minister said the failure to form a government was the result of the orders and conditions of “some” MPs.

“Kuwait has been going through some difficult times recently…There is no room for hesitation or delay in taking difficult decisions to save the country and ensure its best interests,” Sheikh Mishal said. Told.
