NASA Awards Promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Across America
Vermont Business Magazine NASA is awarding approximately $3.7 million to 17 museums, science centers, and other non-formal education institutions as part of its efforts to increase excitement about STEM. This funding will go towards projects that inspire students and their learning support systems to play an active role in the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“We are excited to grow the community of non-formal education organizations through these awards,” said Tory Johnson, deputy assistant administrator for STEM engagement programs at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “These organizations bring the excitement of STEM and spaceflight to students and help inspire the Artemis generation of future explorers and innovators. It is a true catalyst for partnerships that connect our mission to communities across the country.”
The project was selected by a team involving NASA affiliated museums and non-official institutions (Team II) program and won the TEAM II Community Anchor Award.Both are funded through NASA Next generation STEM This project will help K-12 students, parents, and formal and informal educators engage Generation Artemis in the institution’s mission and discovery. Selected projects will specifically engage students from underserved communities in a variety of STEM learning opportunities, including exhibits, instruction, educational content, and hands-on activities.
Team II Award
NASA’s vision for TEAM II is to enhance the ability of non-formal educational institutions to host NASA-based learning activities while increasing the ability of educational institutions to provide NASA resources to their students. The agency has selected four institutions to receive approximately $3.2 million in cooperative agreements for projects to be implemented over the next three to four years.
The selected institutions and proposed projects are:
- Franklin Institute in Philadelphia: NASA’s Next Champion: Connecting Youth to NASA through a Co-Created Near Peer Mentorship Program
- WEX Foundation, San Antonio: A new world awaits you – the next generation
- Astrobotic Foundation, Pittsburgh: Space Carriers from Earth to the Moon.
- EcoExploratorio, Inc., San Juan, Puerto Rico – Innovative Space Learning and Activities Center: Life on Earth and Beyond Earth
Community Anchor Award
Designation as a Community Anchor certifies an institution as a place to bring NASA STEM and space science to students and families from traditionally underserved areas. The agency has selected 13 institutions to receive approximately $510,000 in grants to help realize these one- to two-year projects, increasing local impact and creating sustainable relationships between local communities and NASA. strengthened the ability to build strong connections.
The selected institutions and proposed projects are:
- Exploration Works, Helena, Montana: From the Moon to Mars to Montana.
- Monsher Museum of Science, Norwich, Vermont: Empowering through climate action.
- Intrepid Museum Foundation, New York: NASA Explore Days.
- Discovery Place, Inc., Charlotte, NC: NASA Community Space Station.
- Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, CT: Using community science to engage underrepresented youth in authentic STEM endeavors and research.
- Museum of Discovery and Science, Inc. (Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Bringing NASA STEM education programs to underserved communities in Broward County
- Growing Great, Manhattan Beach, CA: Space and Urban Food: Teens Addressing Food Security in Los Angeles Communities
- Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland: Expanding STEM/Astronomy Learning to Underserved Youth Communities
- Evergreen Air and Space Museum, McMinnville, Oregon: Space Out! Developing STEM Literacy in Students from 5th Grade to 8th Grade: Through an Immersive Space Science Learning Experience
- Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ: A family of science-powered campuses.
- San Diego Air and Space Museum, San Diego: Imagine the future of space
- FL Newspaper by Education Coordinator in Deerfield Beach, Florida: STEM engagement increases among underserved youth in Tampa Bay, Florida
- STEM Advancement, Inc. (Pinola, Mississippi): Inspiring space-related experiences for rural students.
