The Baltimore Orioles’ successful West Coast road trip isn’t the only thing people are talking about right now within the organization. The Orioles announced Monday that they have hired Katie Griggs as their first woman to serve as president of business operations. What is a president of business operations? The president in this role is responsible for implementing new software, managing databases and running financial management procedures. Griggs is highly regarded in these areas, as evidenced by her past in the same position with the Seattle Mariners. The Orioles said in a news release that Griggs was named president of business operations for the Seattle Mariners in July 2021, managing all aspects of the team’s business operations, including investments to improve technology, operations and the fan experience at T-Mobile Park. What can Orioles fans look forward to? T-Mobile Park became the first venue to host the MLB All-Star Game and the NHL Winter Classic in the same calendar year. These events generated more than $80 million in revenue for the city of Seattle alone. “I am truly excited to join the Orioles organization. It is an incredible honor to root for this historic franchise, the city of Baltimore and our passionate fans,” Griggs said. “I look forward to contributing to the team’s success on and off the field.” Griggs began her business career in Atlanta with MLS Atlanta United. Hired in 2017, Griggs was the chief business officer overseeing all aspects of Atlanta United’s front office. She has also received numerous awards throughout her career, including Game Changer (2017) and 40 Under 40 (2022). According to the Associated Press, one of the reasons Griggs relocated was to live closer to her family on the East Coast. Griggs will begin her role with the Orioles on August 19th. She is currently the only woman holding the “president” position in MLB.
