Opinion: Who is the threat to democracy?

Those of a certain age will remember a time when after an election, the losing side would usually accept the result and support the new president during what was then called the “honeymoon” phase. Richard Nixon conceded defeat to John F. Kennedy in 1960, but believed the election was “stolen” by Kennedy operatives in Cook County, Illinois. Al Gore conceded defeat to George W. Bush in a close election in 2000. Hillary Clinton conceded in 2016, but Donald Trump is still in denial about his loss in 2020, by more than seven million votes.

The era of making concessions “for the sake of the country” is over. Not only will there be no married life, but “divorce” will be the first to occur.

Democrats and the left are plotting ways to oppose all of Donald Trump’s policies, including his plan to deport millions of immigrants, claiming that he would be a “threat to democracy” if he wins in November. It seems Democrats believe that whether President Biden wins by a small or large margin, they have a permanent right to govern even if the majority voted differently. Fuck the voters.

One might conclude that such actions make them a real threat to democracy.

The New York Times article reveals Democratic strategies, including lawsuits to stop deportations and Democratic governors stockpiling abortion pills. What on earth do Democrats have to do with abortion?

Let me make sure I understand correctly. If Trump wins, he will be a threat to our Constitution, our laws, our environment, and pretty much everything else. We are a constitutional republic, not a pure democracy, but since Democrats keep using the word, let’s look at the definition: “Government by the people. A form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by the people or their elected representatives under a system of free elections.”

Are Democrats saying that if the majority of Americans voted for Trump and the majority of electors voted for the former president, it’s not a democracy, but if Biden wins, it’s a democracy? Isn’t that a contradiction?

In the not-too-distant past, the losers of an election would lick their wounds, study what went wrong, and survive to fight again. Those days are over. We are now at war all year round. This is not good for the country and only emboldens our enemies.

From the Times article: “Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang denounced the efforts as an attempt to block Mr. Trump from pursuing his legitimate policy agenda.”

“It’s no surprise that Biden and his cronies are working overtime to thwart the will of the American people who voted for President Trump and his America First policies,” Chang said. “Their egregious actions are a direct threat to democracy.”

Whether you’re a Trump supporter or an anti-Trump supporter, Chang has a point: an election can’t be legitimate only if your side wins and not if the other side wins. Such an attitude is the quickest way to weaken America into divided states and a perpetually divided people.”
