I understand why President Biden wants to run. He saved us from Donald Trump once and he wants to do it again. But he needs to reevaluate whether he’s the best candidate to do it. In my view, he’s not.
In the interest of the country, I call on President Biden to withdraw from the election.
Trump is a felon. A pathological liar. A menace. And he will surely be emboldened by an active Supreme Court that has given him near-total immunity.
During his presidency, Trump has consistently put his own interests above the country’s, attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election and disrupt the peaceful transition of power. He has called the January 6 rioters “patriots.”
Meanwhile, the MAGA Republicans have put forward radical policies in Project 2025, making their plans for a second term for President Trump clear.
But the national debate has focused on President Biden’s age and competence, and he is the only one who can change that.
I deliver this assessment with sadness. Vermont loves Joe Biden. President Biden and VP Harris won a higher percentage of the vote here than in any other state. But ordinary Vermonters are worried that Biden won’t win this time, and they fear that Trump will become president again. These are real concerns of ordinary voters I’ve heard recently – mothers counting on the Child Tax Credit and seniors relying on Medicare.
The latest data makes clear the growing political danger to Democrats. States that were once Democratic strongholds are now leaning Republican. These new developments in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia need to be taken seriously, not dismissed or ignored.
The good news is that President Biden has united the party and has put together a powerful field capable of defeating Trump. Vice President Harris is a capable and proven leader, and there are young, vibrant Democratic governors and senators in battleground states who can be elected. These leaders not only have the experience to campaign and win in tough political environments, but also the fundraising networks, media experience, charisma, and ability to inspire voters across the party and across generations.
We have asked President Biden for a long time to do so much for so many. It has taken unparalleled selflessness and courage. As he has always done, we ask him to put us first. We urge him to do so now.
