In a remarkable demonstration of community involvement and service, students from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch came together to address the educational disparities facing low-income housing communities. Throughout the school year, these high school students (primarily her sophomore year and her freshman year) were dedicated to the mission of providing critical academic support that bridged the gap in educational resources and opportunities.
The initiative began as a student-led idea, born out of discussions about how best to use their skills and resources to bring about meaningful change in the communities around them. Students recognized the difficult circumstances faced by families in local low-income housing areas, who have limited access to educational support and enrichment activities. Motivated by a desire to promote equal educational opportunities, the students organized a tutoring program specifically for elementary school students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Each week, a dedicated team of Del Norte High School volunteers met to plan and implement tutoring sessions covering a variety of subjects, including reading, math, science, and writing.
