OpenAI’s first acquisition is analytics startup Rockset.
The ChatGPT developer announced the deal on Friday, saying it will “integrate Rockset’s technology to strengthen our search infrastructure across our products.” The company also said members of the Rockset team will join OpenAI.

As the battle to build the most capable AI models intensifies, OpenAI is looking to gain a competitive advantage over rivals such as Google and Anthropic.

Details of how Rockset’s real-time search and analytics database will integrate with OpenAI’s products are unclear (as are the amounts OpenAI will pay to acquire Rockset). However, OpenAI has an enterprise model for businesses that can benefit from data query and analytics in the form of chatbots. OpenAI is also rumored to be working on a search engine, so acquiring a company that allows for real-time data retrieval could indicate ChatGPT will become a strong competitor to Google Search. There is also the OpenAI API, which could be improved with more or better data analytics tools.
“We’re excited to join OpenAI and bring powerful search capabilities to AI, helping users, businesses, and developers get the most out of their data,” said Rockset CEO Venkat Venkataramani, which means Rockset’s tech could be brought to all of the above.
At the announcement of the lock set, Venkataramani also mentioned that the lock set. It aims to “help OpenAI solve the tough database problems that AI apps face at scale,” referring to the increasingly prominent problem of feeding AI models high-quality data and ensuring they are properly tuned.
