Heavy rains that continued for several hours on Wednesday caused severe flooding, inundating many residential areas and restricting vehicular movement on major roads in many parts of Lagos State.
Floodwaters submerged houses in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state and destroyed a two-storey building in the Mushin area of the state, affecting thousands of residents and preventing some pupils from attending school in some parts of the state.
The Lagos state government said the rains lasted for nine hours. Videos showed commuters being submerged in floodwaters, with some miscreants building makeshift bridges to extort money from commuters, charging 100 naira to transport people through the floodwaters.
Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has reiterated his commitment to remove structures that impede the free flow of stormwater. Wahab was responding to a post by X who questioned whether the demolition of Igbo-owned properties and businesses in Lagos was politically motivated. In a statement by its spokesman on Wednesday, the EFCC said the shadowy group has been actively campaigning on social media, recruiting Nigerian youths, including students, to launch an armed uprising against the anti-corruption agency. The EFCC further alleged that the planned protests are aimed at resisting the operations of the commission, especially in areas relating to cybercrime.
In Edo State, students of the University of Benin demonstrated en masse on Wednesday in protest against frequent power outages on the university campus. Students said the blackouts hit the university after they were unable to reach an agreement with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company over unfair electricity tariffs. Soldiers were seen closing in on the protesters who had blocked the Benin/Ore Expressway in a viral video.
The Senate has rejected a motion calling for an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of security funds for the purchase of a yacht and the construction of a university. The motion, moved by Senator Adams Oshiomole, came during debate on the recent bombings in Gwoza, Borno State.

Afrobeat singer and biker, Joy Ebide, completed a solo ride from Kenya to Lagos on Sunday, June 30. Ebide, who hails from Edo State, began his journey from Kenya on March 10.
Many have described the journey as a testament to her determination and adventurous spirit, having moved from Lagos to Kenya just a few years ago in search of new experiences and since then, she has gained a large online following. In videos about her journey, Ebideh has spoken about her considerable troubles in Africa, particularly with immigration officials in Angola where she had visa issues, as well as being nearly bitten by a snake in the forests of a Tanzanian town.
Ebeide said she was inspired to embark on the journey after a near-death experience left her feeling like she had been given a second chance at life and was determined to do more than just survive. On June 30, she became the first African woman to complete the solo journey from Kenya to Lagos in under four months.
