Ahead of the former NFL star’s death, O.J. Simpson’s longtime lawyer, who was named executor of his will last week, said Ron Goldman’s parents will receive the millions awarded in a 1998 civil judgment. He said he would ensure any claim to recover the dollars was filed. Murder suspects will be accepted into the Foundation.
Malcolm LaVergne, the attorney who represented Mr. Simpson from 2009 until his death on April 10 after a battle with prostate cancer, recanted his statement last week when he spoke to Mr. Simpson by phone. “Let me say upfront that Fred Goldman’s claims will be accepted, and his claims will be processed in accordance with Nevada law,” Lavergne said. THRacknowledged that his earlier statements were directed at his lawyer, not at Fred Goldman, who has relentlessly pursued justice for his son since the 1997 civil trial ruling.
“Within an hour of finding out O.J. was dead, he started saying shit. My defender instinct was, ‘Oh, are you going to keep taunting him after he’s dead?’ ”’ he said. “I said, ‘OK, you know what? You’re not getting anything.’ That was what I said at the time. But when I retracted it, it was a pretty harsh statement. And now I’m going in a different direction. I’m here.”
Mr. Lavergne said he would “be transparent” with the families of Mr. Brown Simpson and Mr. Goldman, whose bodies were found stabbed to death outside their home in an affluent Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles in June 1994. said. “We’re going to do our homework and look at what we can do to sort out this estate before we go to court,” Lavergne said.

Tens of millions of dollars against Goldmans and Browns are subject to judgment liens and are “secured debts” that will be paid ahead of Simpson’s creditors who hold unsecured debts.
Simpson’s assets, including real estate in Florida, are held in a trust and will now go through probate in court. The NFL Hall of Famer is survived by his four adult children. Arnel, 55, Jason, 54, with his first wife Margaret, Sydney, 35, and Justin, 33, with Brown. LaVergne said he would approve the decision once the four reached an agreement based on what he knew his father wanted.
Lavergne said the decision to cremate Simpson’s remains will be made by the children this week. He added that there are no immediate funeral plans, but a memorial service to commemorate Simpson’s life is planned in the coming weeks and months.
“If it does happen, it is intended to be limited to family and friends,” Lavergne said.
