Vice presidential candidate South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem defended the killing of dogs and goats on her family’s farm, which is described in a forthcoming book.
According to excerpts obtained by the Guardian, Noem killed her dog Cricket because he was “untrainable,” “dangerous to those who came into contact with it,” and “not worthy of a hunting dog.”
“I hated that dog,” Noem wrote, according to the Guardian.
In the excerpt, Noem said she tried to tame the dog, which acted “like a trained assassin,” with an electronic collar, but ultimately decided to shoot it at a gravel pit after the accident. I wrote that I did it. The dog attacked her family’s chickens in her hometown and bit her.
“It was not a fun job,” Noem wrote, according to the Guardian. And after it was over, he realized that he had to do another unpleasant job. ”
The Guardian then quotes an excerpt from a book in which Noem shoots a goat the same way. Noem describes the goat as “nasty and vile” and has a “nasty, musky, foul-smelling” odor. Noem added that the goat had a habit of chasing and defeating children.
Aiming to distinguish herself from the typical politician, Noem writes: “If I were a better politician, I wouldn’t be here talking about this.”
Noem posted a photo of the Guardian article and said her behavior on the farm was not unusual.
“We love animals, but difficult decisions like this happen all the time on the farm. Sadly, a few weeks ago we had to let go of three horses that had been in our family for 25 years. Noem is an ardent Trump supporter and is one of several politicians the president has confirmed is on his short list of running mates.
In early April, Noem told CNN’s Dana Bash that she would support Trump even if he were found guilty in the New York hush money trial.
Amid continued speculation about his potential as President Trump’s vice president, Noem declined to say whether he would have certified the 2020 election if he had been in the same position as former Vice President Mike Pence.
In a poll of attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, when asked who they wanted President Trump to choose as his running mate, she tied with his first choice. Noem and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy each received 15% of the straw vote.
During the meeting, the South Dakota governor harshly criticized those who participated in the 2024 Republican primary against President Trump, saying they entered the race for “personal gain” and “a period of attention.” He suggested that it might be.
“I was one of the first to support Donald J. Trump for president. Last year, when everyone asked me if I would consider running for president, I said no. I can’t win. Why are you running for president?” Nomu said.
