The NFL’s first international game of the 2024 season, a Week 1 matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and a yet-to-be-announced Brazilian opponent, will be broadcast exclusively on Peacock as the league looks to take advantage of increased code numbers. Ru. Disconnect sports fan.

Although a growing number of NFL games are being featured on streaming-only platforms, whether it’s Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football,” last season’s first Black Friday game, or Peacock’s Super Wild Card Weekend playoff matchup, , Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie doesn’t believe it. The NFL is moving away from free-to-air cable television to a streaming-heavy model.

“The NFL is like any other sports league, but we’re being proactive when it comes to demographics,” Lurie said, via CBS Sports. “Sometimes we want to be younger, and streamers and Amazon have the ability to reach younger audiences. The beauty of the NFL is that most of it is on free TV, and it will always be that way.” will continue, and that’s the basis of the NFL’s popularity.”

Following the success of the Super Wild Card Weekend playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs on Peacock, which drew 28 million viewers, Peacock could become a strong candidate to host NFL games on a regular basis. There is sex.

The 2024 international will serve as a solid benchmark for the platform as to whether the playoff games were just a one-off or if there will be sustainable growth. In any case, Lurie doesn’t think it will soon become the norm for platforms like Peacock to negotiate streaming rights to NFL games.

“I don’t see it more and more, but what I’m seeing is that the population is very receptive to streaming in a certain way,” Lurie said. “Strictly speaking, it was the Wild Card Game on Peacock that was a big success. I think we had 21 million, 22 million viewers, and technically it was great. And it was a big hit with the younger demographic. “This is another way to expand the distribution of games. But the strength of NFL games is that they are free and directly accessible to all consumers.”

While Peacock found immediate success with its initial success in sports streaming, Amazon is still learning how to navigate the market. “Thursday Night Football” averaged 11.86 million viewers, up 24% from the 9.58 million average in 2022, the first year the platform hosted weekly games.

However, the 2023 Black Friday game between the Dolphins and the New York Jets drew an average of 9.6 million viewers and peaked at 11.8 million viewers. This game was less of a hit, probably because Aaron Rodgers didn’t play, but it was a more competitive matchup, and the expectations for this type of match are that he’ll get close to 20 million viewers.
