The draft plan includes management options to protect big game habitat, ranching and outdoor recreation.
Today, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership applauded the Bureau of Land Management’s long-awaited release of amendments to the Lakeview Resource Management Plan, which, when finalized, will establish a blueprint for conservation and management of approximately 3.2 million acres of public lands in southeastern Oregon.
“The announcement of the Lakeview RMP amendments provides the thousands of hunters who value the wild and working landscapes of this vast region an opportunity to have their voice heard to ensure a success that benefits sportsmen.” “We are pleased to be working with the Oregon Department of Health and Human Services to help protect our communities,” said Tristan Henry, TRCP’s Oregon field representative. “The plan includes management options that protect undeveloped backcountry and wildlife corridors for big game and other wildlife throughout this pristine landscape.”
Hunters and anglers have been working on revising the Lakeview Plan since 2014, and today’s release of the RMP amendments marks an important step in the public process that will determine how to balance wilderness landscapes, habitat, recreation, grazing, development and other uses over the next 20 years or more. The release opens a 90-day comment period, during which the public can provide input on the Preferred Alternative and other management options developed by the Lakeview BLM office.
“TRCP appreciates the BLM’s dedication to developing a plan that balances sustainable use, cultivation and conservation to ensure the Lakeview area’s quality hunting and fishing opportunities are protected for future generations.” “This is a critical piece of the story,” said Michael O’Casey, TRCP’s associate director of forest policy and Northwest programs.
“Public lands in the Lakeview area provide high-quality habitat for pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mule deer and sage grouse.” “It’s a very positive thing,” said Mary Jo Hedrick, state president of the Oregon Hunters Association. “These public lands offer a wide range of quality hunting opportunities, and it’s critical that hunters are included in this plan to help protect these valuable landscapes and safeguard hunting opportunities for future generations.”
“TRCP and its partners are committed to working with members and other stakeholders to develop plans that prioritize habitat conservation while supporting ongoing active management for habitat restoration and sustainable economic activities such as ranching, hunting and outdoor recreation.” Henry added. “We look forward to continued engagement and collaboration to finalize a plan that provides for the permanent conservation and resiliency of BLM public lands in Oregon.”
With the comment period now open, TRCP invites members and the hunting and fishing community to participate. Public feedback will be critical in developing a final Lakeview Resource Management Plan that reflects a balanced approach that honors sporting traditions, supports the local economy, and ensures the integrity and vitality of this landscape.
