BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Gone are the days of waiting at a bus stop in Brevard County, wondering when the bus will arrive. New technology will forever change the way people ride public transportation.
The future is here, and Space Coast Area Transit has saved a seat for you!
“With our state-of-the-art website, 321Transit.com, and the 321Transit bus tracking app, riders can see their bus or trolley route in real time and receive text notifications five, 10 or 15 minutes before their ride arrives,” said Transportation Director Terry Jordan.
“You can easily find routes by name, address, area, place or landmark, and customize your ride by using the trip planner to navigate multiple stops and routes.”
Contactless mobile tickets provided by Token Transit allow you to conveniently purchase bus and trolley passes with your smartphone – no cash or contact required when riding with an electronic pass.
“People can also purchase bus passes to send to friends, family and coworkers,” Jordan said.

Once on board, you’ll enjoy free Wi-Fi for the entire trip. With 23 routes and over 1,100 stops, there are endless opportunities to get to your destination. Plus, all buses are equipped with bike racks and are wheelchair accessible.
Public transportation not only saves energy, it efficiently connects workers to jobs, students to universities, and transports residents to hundreds of locations throughout Brevard.
Through an agreement with Eastern Florida State College, EFSC students can ride the entire system for free with their student ID.
The Beach Trolley helps ease traffic congestion on A1A and is loved by tourists, residents and hospitality workers. Whether you’re a tourist or local, the Beach Trolley gets you to the beach, shopping, dining and more.

“We are working hard to upgrade our fleet with more environmentally friendly vehicles,” said Lance Parker, Space Coast Area Transit’s manager of operations and maintenance. “Hybrid electric buses reduce noise and engine emissions, helping to make us more environmentally friendly.”
Additionally, the new paratransit vehicles will offer improved fuel efficiency, safety and comfort, helping to facilitate life-saving services for vulnerable road users,” Parker added.
Space Coast Area Transit operates paratransit services to assist people with transportation needs who cannot utilize fixed routes.

Volunteers in Motion is an innovative volunteer-based program that provides transportation to individuals who cannot access other Space Coast Area Transit services.
“By providing transportation to locations like medical facilities, pharmacies and grocery stores, Volunteers in Motion supports individuals who would otherwise not be able to live independently at home,” said Program Coordinator Lori Hamilton.
Additionally, Volunteers In Motion drivers receive step-by-step directions from their GPS-enabled vehicles to guide clients precisely to their destination.

Space Coast Area Transit’s vanpool provider, Commute With Enterprise, is helping to advance sustainability goals at scale. Commute With Enterprise works closely with employers to recruit and retain top talent, renting vans to groups of 4-15 passengers.
The vehicle is used for employees’ daily commute to work. Fixed monthly costs include rental, maintenance, roadside assistance and insurance.
Vanpooling leads to further savings, reduced pollution and valuable time. For convenience, many passengers meet at centralized locations and share the ride to their workplaces.
The Agency Vanpool Program benefits nonprofit organizations such as Brevard Alzheimer’s, Circles of Care and the Florida Department of Health. Transporting people with mobility issues is now easy and affordable for organizations that rent vans through Commute With Enterprise. Currently, 14 local agencies participate in this cost-saving program.
Technology upgrades are costly, but Space Coast Area Transit is working diligently to secure outside funding.
In a typical fiscal year, the general fund’s $2.1 million would impact more than $40 million in state and federal grant funding, according to Finance Officer Karen Petters.
“For every dollar received locally, $19.05 is donated from outside Brevard County. These dollars help stimulate our economy through investments in payroll, operating expenses, capital equipment and improvements, and technological advancements,” Petters explained.

The new technology also helps Space Coast Area Transit perform one of its most important functions: transportation oversight for Brevard County Emergency Management.
Once an emergency is declared, an automated system contacts pre-registered individuals with special needs and provides them with information on how to prepare. Space Coast Area Transit then makes more than 10,000 phone calls to verify medical requirements, shelter assignments and transportation details.
Mobility Manager Carmen Baez said in addition to its around-the-clock participation in the Emergency Operations Center, Space Coast Area Transit is assisting with up to 1,800 trips to help all citizens with special needs return to their homes once the emergency is over.
“A thoughtful balance between automation and human interaction provides another great solution to ensure that no member of our community is left behind,” Baez said.
