Dabbawalas have been a part of Mumbai for a long time. They may seem like they just deliver food, but they are actually an integral and massive part of the city that makes Mumbai what it is today. Recently, Anand, chairman of Mahindra and Mahindra, his Mahindra, shared an interesting video about a dabbawala. But his tweet had a twist. He approached X to post a video of a London-based company that sells food in dhabas. While sharing an interesting video, he also talked about how it is “reverse colonialism”.

“There is no better or tastier proof of decolonization than this!” exclaimed Anand Mahindra in the caption of his post. This video introduces a London-based company that has adopted the Mumbai Dabbawala System, a zero-waste system that supports London. As the video progresses, people are seen packing food in dhabas and delivering it on bicycle-like vehicles. The second post says, “Mumbai’s dabbawalas work in different patterns, collecting food from their respective homes and delivering it to their workplaces. This is rather similar to Swiggy, where they pack the same food in one place. And then deliver it to different people. Anyway, it’s a good start-up.”

“This is the right type of colonization. No extortion, no starvation, just good food,” a third person commented.

A fourth said: “Westerners aren’t used to stiltiffins or bento boxes. While we were there, the locals used to think my steel bento boxes were weird. ” he said.

A fifth added: “Learn and adopt India’s sustainable solutions inherited from our ancestors. India is more modern and sustainable than any other developed country. It just needs to be emphasized.” .
