The Maryland Council on Economic Education (MCEE) presented awards to several Montgomery County student groups for their achievements in MCEE’s Stock Market Game.
According to MCEE, the competition is designed to teach students about personal finance and economics in a “fun and competitive atmosphere.” More than 20,000 students from 20 counties across Maryland participated in the competition, the largest number of participants in the past 13 years.
Three groups were recognized from Montgomery County at the May 15 awards ceremony, one group from each of the three age/grade divisions: elementary, middle and high school.
All three groups competed in the Stock Market Game category, in which students were tasked with managing a fictitious $100,000 portfolio to generate the best return on investment.
A duo from Albert Einstein High School in Kensington won the high school freshman stock market game state championship. The duo, Henry Alvarenga and Schuyler Hills, increased their portfolio by 55 percent, the highest growth rate of any group that entered the competition.
At the year-long Central Regional competition, Henry Badraslioglu, Grady Blair, Jacob Lasher and Jonah Richards of Bulls School in Potomac won the middle school division, increasing their portfolios by 26.5 percent.
At the spring Central Regional competition, Norwood School’s Tyler Bernstein, Lily Hetherington and Ronan Zimzuvadia won the elementary school division, their portfolios increasing by 1.5%.
