Sir Keir Starmer speaks at a victory rally with Claire Ward, who won the East Midlands mayoral election yesterday.
Mr Ward opened the rally by thanking local Labor for their work “not only to secure a mayoral election victory here in the East Midlands, but to secure Labor in every seat here in the East Midlands”. He expressed his gratitude to the activists.
She said the aim was to bring “power and funding from Westminster” to the region and allow it to “choose our own priorities”.
The new mayor introduces Sir Keir, who praises it as “amazing” and a “really important victory”.
“You fought for this in a very, very positive movement,” he told the assembled activists.
“The trust and confidence of voters in the East Midlands, which is an area that is really, really important to us, has been rewarded.”
The Labor leader declared that the victory would go into the “history books”, saying it had “convinced people that we are a transformed Labor Party with positive plans for this country”. It will be remembered as a day.” Vote safely against the Labor cross. ”
Sir Keir reiterated yesterday’s comments and said the results of the local elections were a message to the government that people were “tired of division, confusion and failure”.
he declares: “I’m sorry. I don’t care what party you support. If you leave the country in a worse state than you found it 14 years later, you don’t deserve to be in government any longer.” ”
Today is “the beginning of turning the page” for the general election, he said, adding: “There is a lot of work to do.”
