Two Lawrence Art Markets will be held throughout the day on Saturday, with the aim of supporting area artists.
Community organizer and artist Monique Mercurio (Oloni Costanoan Esselen Nation) has partnered with Haskell Indian Nations University to invite more local artists to this month’s Haskell Open Market. Mercurio hopes the market will become a space for former Art Love Collective artists, and Haskell organizers welcomed it, she wrote in a Facebook post about the event.
Art Love Collective recently closed its storefront at 646 Vermont Ave., forcing the roughly 40 artists from the collective who sold their original work there to relocate.
Mercurio, who leads her beadwork business MercTribe Designs, will be at the market along with several other artists and artisans, and Peach’s Frybread food will also be available for purchase.
The Haskell Open Market will be held on Saturday, June 29th from 10am to 3pm at Haskell’s Tommaney Library, 2500 Creek Ave. Attendance is free.
The market was originally scheduled to be held outdoors in the parking lot of the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, but was moved indoors to avoid the summer heat, Mercurio said.
Artists interested in selling can register online (for free) through a Google form. Tables and chairs will be provided for vendors. If you have any questions, please email HaskellUSDAExtension@haskell.edu.
LOLA Pride Party and Art Market
LOLA (Lovers of Lawrence Art) will be hosting their first ever pop-up event in celebration of Pride Month.
The party and market will feature 16 local queer artists selling Pride-themed art and merchandise, one of whom is Sam Azzaro, former Mx of ALC’s Bizarre.
Former Miss Gay Kansas, Deja Brooks, will host a Pride Storytime for all ages, and other local drag performers will join in the celebration with music.
The Pride Pop-Up Party is scheduled for Saturday, June 29th from 3pm to 7pm at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St. in Downtown Lawrence. Attendance is free.
Light snacks are also available for purchase.
