Rayner jokes about his ‘obsession’ with living conditions, presses Dowden for no-fault eviction
Angela Reiner is up to grill Oliver Dowden.
She begins by paying tribute to the “tireless activist” Sir Frank Field and wishing the Jewish community a happy Passover.
The Labor deputy leader then got straight to the point, saying the Conservatives were “very keen to talk to me about my living conditions”. Police are investigating whether she violated election laws..
But she says people want to know what the Conservative Party plans to do about their issues.
She mentions Sky News coverage About a woman named Natalie who was served two no-fault eviction notices within 18 months.
“Instead of being obsessed with my house, when will he win my heart and show the same obsession with ending no-fault evictions?” Reiner asks.
Mr Dowden responded that he was delighted to be interacting with her again in the Commons, for the fifth time in 12 months.
“Anything more than that and she’ll claim it as her primary residence,” he joked, later noting that a vote on the issue would take place in the House of Commons later today. .
Ms Rayner accused him of “causing” to the interests of Tory supporters and “delaying justice for people like Natalie”.
She then moved on to the issue of leasehold rights, calling it “another Conservative housing failure”. The Labor Party’s deputy leader has criticized the proposed ban, which only applies to housing.
“It’s like banning non-military forces while excluding a Conservative prime minister,” Reiner quipped.
“A worthy and honorable woman is talking about legislation that has been introduced by this government that the opposition has failed to introduce throughout its tenure,” Mr Dowden said.
